400 Block On Broadway

From The Album: McPherson

Lyrics

November day, the rain was comin’ down
On 400 Block on Broadway
Things I had to do, I had to move along
To music square near Broadway

A car hit a pool, soaked my brand new clothes
I felt it ruined my whole day
I looked to the side, it irritated me
“To see where an old wino lay.”

And Mister I still wonder
How much did your Mama pray?
And did your Daddy show you the way
To 400 Block on Broadway?

I saw him turn his head as if to say, “Please help.”
But you see, well I was busy that day
I went into a store, erased him from my mind
But still he layed there on Broadway

Back in the rain I stopped to take a look
For you see I really didn’t hate him
I shook his chilly arm and said, “Are you okay?”
And I found a lifeless old man

And Mister I still wonder
How much did your Mama pray?
And did your Daddy show you the way
To 400 Block on Broadway?

I looked down the street, a younger wino stood
And I said, “Please, please won’t you come and help me?”
With him lookin’ down I said, “I think he’s gone.”
And He said, “Aw there ain’t nothin’ wrong with him.”

So in command he called out his name and he said
“Virgil, get up on your feet!”
I thought about his name and a lot of other things
As Virgil just layed there on the street

And Virgil I still wonder
How much did your Mama pray?
And did your Daddy show you the way
To 400 Block on Broadway?
